New features in Firefox 13

Mozilla finally released new version of Firefox-13, the latest version of its open source. Although Mozilla has yet to make it publically available on Firefox’s website, the browser itself has made its way to our hands just a tad bit early.

The most visible new feature in Firefox 13 is its new Home page, one of the many interface changes implemented by the Firefox UX development team. This new Home page — accessible by typing about:home into the Address bar — provides users with the ability to create their own customised home page, with shortcuts to bookmarks, downloads, add-ons, history, sync, settings and an option for restoring the previous session. Users are presented with the option of using this home page when setting up Firefox 13 for the first time.

So what else is new in Firefox 13?

  • When opening a new tab, users are now presented with their most visited pages
  • SPDY protocol now enabled by default for faster browsing on supported sites
  • Restored background tabs are not loaded by default for faster startup
  • Smooth scrolling is now enabled by default
  • 72 total improvements to Page Inspector, HTML panel, Style Inspector, Scratchpad and Style Editor
  • The column-fill CSS property has been implemented
  • Support for the CSS3 background-position property extended syntax has been added
