5 practical ways to backup your data

Backing up your files is one of the most important jobs especially on laptops or tablets which are more prone to damage or theft compared to desktops PC. Your hard drive might crash after your laptop fall from table or thieves might steal your laptop at a café. Your work can lost if you have a back-up copy. Here I have 5 practical way to backup your data and you can do it yourself (DIY).

Optical disks
Optical disks have a storage capacity of up to 50GB (Blu-ray) and normal DVD (4.4GB). This is the cheapest way to backup your data. But the computers start moving to smaller and thinner such as ultrabook and tablet PC, slowly optical drive become unpopular and is predicted no longer used in the future, same situation happened to floppy disk.

Flash drive/ thumb drive
Very popular when I studied in college till now. It is known as USB stick, thumb drives are the best alternative to store your data. If you are very effective and well manage person, you can store every thumbs drive you have with different category and usage. But the problem with thumb drives is the devices is too small and very portable and can easily missing in your pocket or on the desk. Thumb drives suitable to store data temporarily and move data from one computer to another computer.

External hard drive
The most effective way to backup your data is in external hard drives. Transfer data to external hard drives much faster using certain software than optical disks and also reliable. Now the external hard drives have capacity more than 1 Terabytes (TB). So, it is possible to you to backup all your data in your laptop or computer. But the problem with external drives is they can easily damaged by physical shock.

External Solid State Drive (SSD)
SSDs have same functionality hard drives, but SSDs have durability same as thumb drive. But so far, nobody use SSDs as a backup storage because they are so expensive compared to hard drives with the same capacity. Available capacity up to 256GB.

Cloud storage
Storing data in the cloud is the most convenient way to backup but you must have internet access in order to do so. The price of cloud services depend on capacity and features. They give free sign-up with small capacity and limited functions. Suitable for small files backup and not suitable for backup confidential files.

You also can store data in SD cards but I’m not suggesting doing so because data can easily damage when transferring data from SD card to computer or vice versa if you are using poor quality of memory card reader. I have experiences where a few of my pictures in smartphone damaged after transfer to computer.
